Ask HN: Are there any serious competitors to Stripe Press?

I'm looking specifically for non-traditional publishers who are still trying to do serious work in the space and/or compete with the best traditional publishers. Basically, analogues to Stripe Press.

I don't know if I'd consider most to be to be direct "competitors" to Stripe Press, but there are tons of independent publishers out there. A few I order from: http://www.gaspereau.com/catalogue.php http://www.gaspereau.com/catalogue.php https://www.oakknoll.com/oak-knoll-press.php https://www.oakknoll.com/oak-knoll-press.php https://www.foliosociety.com https://www.foliosociety.com https://www.nottinghilleditions.com https://www.nottinghilleditions.com https://godine.com https://godine.com What's happening? Are we starting a bookstore or press? I'm down. I've been working on getting something off the ground!

Thanks for these! Ha, I love the enthusiasm - I've been working on a book and researching publishers and have ordered from Stripe once or twice and was curious if there were more like it as they seem to do a good job (and of course at the same time I've seen the news about the antitrust lawsuit and am reading Corey Doctorow & Rebecca Giblin's book Chokepoint Capitalism which talks about the publishing industry). But would love to jam out on ideas, I think the concept of a model like bookshop is very compelling. Email in bio

What's special about Stripe Press? What makes it "serious work"? In "the space" -- what space? Stripe seems like a boutique publisher that carefully selects a small number of titles for quality and appeal to a certain audience. But "traditional" publishers like MIT Press, Springer, and Addison-Wesley have put out hundreds of important, high-quality books. With all the signal out there, I don't find it too hard to figure out which ones are the classics that are worth reading.
