WhatsApp recently added e2e backups (as an option) too. I always thought the reason they didn't encrypt backups was as a way to remove pressure from security services to weaken the encryption. Better to let the security services go after Google/apple as the backup provider. And have an option to turn off backups for the security paranoid users. I wonder why they changed stance...
