This thread suggested that comments are ranked with the same basic strategy that posts are ranked with: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7287535 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7287535 My best guess is that if your comments never rank well then it is likely a function of your peers not "up voting" as that seems to be what drives my comment placing.
