When I was 14, I worked 8 hour shifts 4 times a week including 3 during the week after school. This included operating a deep fryer which didn't automatically raise and lower the baskets which is a task specifically called out as a violation. When I was 15, I left that job for a warehouse job where I worked a 4 hour shift M-F after school driving a forklift. Working at 14 was younger than most of my friends but by 16 most of my friends had jobs and definitely worked longer than 3 hour shifts on school days. Most of them worked retail or restaurants which mostly meant shifts from close to when school got out until closing. Our school day ended at 1:50pm. My friends were almost all either middle class or upper middle class. Many worked to pay for a car. Others were gifted a used car but expected to pay gas and insurance so worked.
This was in the mid to late 80s. I wonder if these were violations then.
