Enjoy it while it lasts, it'll be only a matter of time before advertisements and 'SEO' tricks make their way into large language models.
- newaccount74 4y agoI tried asking it some questions in German, and the answers read similar to auto-translated spam you often find on the internet. (If you look for stuff in German, a lot of results are often just auto-translated from English) So it seems it's already suffering from spam. A thought just hit me: If AI researchers use text from the internet to train their auto-translators, and a lot of text on the internet is created with automatic translators, the translators will end up reinforcing their errors and develop a very distinct style, and since people read a lot of the autotranslated stuff, maybe people will also start writing in that style...
- wnkrshm 4y agoThey might. A professor (Jonathan Berger) from what I can gather surveyed each semester's students about which track they preferred, an uncompressed track, a memorex tape track or an mp3-compressed track. People got used to the compression artifacts and preferred them in some genres. Sadly I can't pull up a source better than a random blog post about it, since it's an older one and would necessitate a little more searching. (There is a radio interview with Berger about this somewhere)
- brutusborn 4y agoI had the same experience with new car speakers. Orders of magnitude better quality, but I miss the 'tinny-ness' in some old songs. It's the same reason people still use film cameras, both the process and the result produce nostalgia.
- entropicdrifter 4y agoThis is also a well-documented aspect of analog audio within the audiophile community. Vinyl is often preferred even when it was produced from digital masters (and therefore offers no additional resolution to the audio) because it's noisier in a "more natural" sounding way than digitally pure "sterile" audio. Likewise with Class A tube amplifiers: they create more Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) than far cheaper digital amplifiers (including those used in recording studios by professionals), but the distortion they do provide is considered to be enhancing the audio beyond what is possible with an accurate recreation. To be clear, I personally think this is largely sunk-cost reinforced snake oil. Vinyl records produced from analog masters on high grade vinyl and set to play back at a higher RPM (say 45 instead of 33 1/3) can produce a higher resolution output on a sufficiently high end player if you're careful about protecting it from scratches and dust, but high resolution digital recordings can get you the same thing for far cheaper and less hassle.
- Udo 4y agoI wonder if GPT text output embeds some form of fingerprinting to avoid it feeding into itself over time. I know Stable Diffusion and Midjourney do this, but obviously it's trivial to do with images...
