This is a pretty excellent point. And as I’ve progressed from parent supported student with copious free time to father of four my open source output has certainly dwindled (especially in quantity; I hope that the increase in ability from experience has somewhat mitigated decreases in quality). And as the author has hinted in another recent blog post, the donation thing just doesn’t work for all that many people and presupposes a certain richness both in the author (can afford to put in substantial effort with the only incentive to pay being some sort of “good-will”) and the user (the user is someone who has enough cash they can casually give some of it to a maintainer even if they don’t have to).
