I think there are still enough other contenders (most of the Gulf states for example, Afghanistan, and non-Muslim examples such as North Korea...). But it's sad to see that a country which used to be one of the poster children of a fairly liberal nation with a Muslim majority is regressing so badly. I wish I understood better what's behind this surge in religious extremism (prominently, but not exclusively, in the Muslim world) in the last 10-20 years.
