The Nardo grey on Audis is what I immediately thought of, I definitely think that's what started the trend. The first car where I noticed this effect was the Lamborghini Reventon, which Wikipedia describes as "mid opaque grey without the usual shine". That was apperantly inspired by fighter jets. I like it, although like everything it gets boring when it takes over and dominate. A bigger problem is the lack of color, every new car is some variant of grey.
