The people I'm seeing come to my instance are creating a bolt-hole in case Twitter (im|ex)plodes, but still using Twitter and interacting there. But a sizeable proportion of them are creating a new audience, a new circle of contacts, and in turn some of them are starting to use Mastodon as their primary platform. So I think this is the usual lazy journalism looking for quick, clean, and obvious answers. And as they say: "For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong." -- H. L.
