Blame Walter Benjamin.
People, many of us, pay for human made art. Paul Graham is an investor and believer in art. He also believes ai has value.
Don’t be fooled. It’s a false dichotomy. Make better art. If you can’t be better than ai, you don’t “get” what art is in essence.
- mronetwo 4y agoSeems you’re ignoring the entire professional space of people who want to make art and make money out of it. Impoverished internal lives of CEOs will always push them to pick cheap AI generated, laundered art, instead of hiring an artist. It’s cheaper and that all those people care about in the end.
- pksebben 4y agothis is less a problem with ai, and more a problem with persisting an economic model that had it's last major redesign in the 1700s.
- hectorlorenzo 4y agoAs it happened with book binders, printing press operators, tailors, lamplighters, milkmen... what is so special about professional artists?
- 2devnull 4y agoPaul Graham is one the people who is supporting talented artists by buying their work. The patronage system has brought much beauty to the world. It’s imperfect and one wishes you could remove the rich men from the art world, but tradition speaks of truths which you’d be wise to listen to.
- rchaud 4y ago> Make better art. If you can’t be better than ai, you don’t “get” what art is in essence. I think that first sentence invalidates the second. "Better than AI" implies the artist's work should be more commercially successful than an AI's. Which of these two enterprises are more likely to have a sales team?
- 2devnull 4y agoMany artists, even the big names (van vogh), had no commercial success. If you’re an artist “for the money”, you are probably not going to be very happy with the outcome.
- thomastjeffery 4y agoLet's stop calling it AI: there is no intelligence, only something that resembles "learning". Competition with art that is "generated" by ML is nothing more than an obfuscated way of competing with other artists whose works were used as a training dataset. There is no artificial system today that actually creates art. All we have are systems that copy art in an intentionally vague fashion.
- 2devnull 4y agoThere is art in building the ai. A great amount of art in the prompts. Art is omnipresent.
