keep in mind the current iteration of ChatGPT doesn't try to execute the code, its understanding is purely based on "reading" existing code.
This tech could potentially be integrated with a compiler and trained through self-play like AlphaZero (possibly with human guidance at a meta level). They could also add some kind of visual modality for UI code.
Once this happens, 90% of devs that work on CRUD style apps will lose their jobs, imo. The software industry will probably become a lot more stratified, like the music industry - a small percentage of ML researchers and devs making a ton of money at the top, close to zero for everyone else.
Software development is most at risk vs other "soft" industries, because for the most part code either works or it doesn't, and it's fairly easy to check.
