I would bet my left gonad that there's more shrinkage at Whole Foods than anywhere by customers being less-than-truthful when they ring up because of the clientele. Though I'm wondering about the risk management if they would want big data to catch them or cheating on organic vs. regular bulk cashews is the "cost of doing business". Also, the people who are inaccurate at self-checkout because they're dyslexic, inattentive, spectrum, etc. I know someone who scams WF all the time and there's little/no recourse or tracking for people who pay in cash and keep their phone's bluetooth and wifi off.
Homeless people OTOH outright steal 40's of beer, sandwiches, beer, and snacks but there's no enforcement or prosecution. The majority of employees of corporate-owned stores are specifically ordered to not attempt to stop or confront thieves for the numerous liability and personal safety concerns it would create. If routine thieves duck in and leave before overworked police would ever arrive, there is zero chance of them being caught.
Random people who could afford it ripping off family- or employee-owned establishments are a different scale of nefarious than someone with nothing to eat who takes boiled eggs and bread from a giant corporation to survive.
