A reader asks how to avoid working for evil
- phyzome 4y agoI'd start with "how do they make their money". Google makes money selling ads, for example; they're primarily an advertising company that happens to have some other lines of business. You can also look at how they differentiate themselves in that market. Again taking Google as an example, their approach is to try to gather as much information as possible about you and everyone else in order to get good targeting. Those are both red flags. Lyft: "Marketplace" for taxis. Except it's illegal taxis, and they differentiate themselves by shedding liability. So the hard part is obviously in figuring this out ahead of time, before the news headlines. Maybe the right approach is just... to ask during the interview? "How does this company make its money, and how does it differentiate itself from competitors in doing so?" And man, if people can't answer that, either because they don't know or they refuse, that's probably a red flag!
