Long before his Twitter fiasco, I decided I would never purchase one of his vehicles. His looooong history, as noted in the article, with the SEC, OSHA, NLRB had permanently put me off Tesla. Much like Apple under Jobs, I dislike cults of personality, and staunchly remained an Android/Linux user.
My wife & I are soon-to-be in the market for an EV, but Tesla is absolutely beyond the line in the sand. Never will I give a single cent to that bloviating asswipe. If Porsche unveils the EV Macan in time, we'll go that way. Besides, the Tesla interiors are cheap garbage.
- taolegal 4y agoAs much as you abhor bloviating, sounds like you're bloviating too.
- scarface74 4y agoYes because Linux doesn’t suffer from cults of personality like RMS… For software developers who haven’t gotten over their addiction to food and shelter and who trade labor for money via software development, the entire premise behind “all software should be free” is quite cultish.
- wcarron 4y agoI don't even know who you're referring to with RMS. Nor do I understand your point here.
- scarface74 4y agoYou never heard of Richard Stallman?
- wcarron 4y agoI do, but not on the level that I connected his name to an acronym.
- nocoiner 4y agoI think you and I think along roughly similar lines. Several years back, I was in the market for an EV and seriously considering a Tesla. However, during the course of that consideration, he made the “$420 funding secured” tweet (and also I believe started spouting off about “pedo guy”) and I decided I preferred not to do business with companies that casually commit major securities fraud. Wound up buying an Audi e-tron instead. Range didn’t hold up to any of the Teslas at the time, but it was more than workable and the fit/finish and interior were excellent.
- wcarron 4y agoYeah, pretty much on the same page. Elon is... many things, almost none of them positive. I'm not going to support that type of person if I can help it. The e-tron is very nice looking. Haven't sat in one, yet. Personally, I'd even prefer a Lucid, as they're based in my state and have a great track record with Formula E. Unfortunately, they're quite pricey and I really don't need so much car, financially or physically.
- HPMOR 4y agoAlthough I don't like the guy much anymore, Tesla's are still the best EV car IMO. They make a pretty good product and it's hard to turn that down.
- redox99 4y agoSeems a bit silly to base your purchasing decisions on the company's CEO and not the product itself.
- wcarron 4y agoI did literally mention their interiors. They're shit for the price range. I also disagree. I can choose to spend my money how I wish. There are plenty of serviceable vehicles and Tesla/Elon's anti-union stance is a perfectly legitimate reason to not buy their cars.
- redox99 4y ago> I did literally mention their interiors. You said you would never purchase one of their vehicles, which to me means that even if they "improved their interiors" you wouldn't buy them. > I can choose to spend my money how I wish. Obviously you can spend your money in a way that is not optimal from a game theory perspective. That doesn't mean it isn't "a bit silly". Also the CEOs of other companies you would actually consider buying, might be "worse" by whatever metric you use. It's just that they don't display their personality and management style on Twitter so you just don't know.
- wcarron 4y ago> You said you would never purchase one of their vehicles, which to me means that even if they "improved their interiors" you wouldn't buy them. That is correct. > That doesn't mean it isn't "a bit silly". Real life isn't a simplified game theory scenario presented by some undergrad college professor. Good god. Your stance is frankly ridiculous. I could easily name a dozen more reasons not to buy a Tesla. Life is a grey soup of decision-making. Is it silly to buy organic? Is it silly to be a vegetarian? Is it not silly to spend money on a luxury vehicle when a bicycle and Kia forte will suffice? People have numerous and varying motivations for purchase decisions and it is almost never as constrained and mathematically straightforward as A^2 + B^2 = C^2
