GCP requiring sales team approval now for basic quota
I've been using GCP for easily a decade now, since it was just App Engine Python 2.5.
I created a new billing account for a new open source project / company, and lo and behold, to access anything more than basic CPUs and quotas, you need to call sales.
Sales doesn't care about small fish, of course, because they are probably paid on commission; the person on the other end of the phone wanted to know our "company name" and "what we were using the CPUs for" (it's an open source project, we are compiling code, not sure what else to say).
After being a GCP loyalist for as long as I have, I'm sad to see this condition. Has anyone else experienced this? Can anyone else share tips about how best to gain quota / access to resources, when you are willing to pay? Yes, I'm already opening an AWS account, but it will take time to learn the equivalent systems in other clouds.
- nivertech 4y agoI guess they have some automated process which analyzes Internet footprint of the new accounts and may flag them for anything shady (i.e. crypto/mining or canabis). Also you didn't said where are you from.
- sgammon 4y agoSpecifically, we're talking about one (1) instance with 16 VCPUs, preemptible. That's where the ceiling is. In a non-exotic region with high capacity. If you pay up front for the server, no problem. Obviously, open source projects / smaller projects benefit from spot compute and related pricing. Definitely seems like a regressive quota policy choice albeit probably by accident.

- orbz 4y agoI would bet this just as much an abuse prevention mechanism than just sales.
- sgammon 4y agoYeah, and I totally get the quota request process. Any GCP user is familiar with providing a basis for your quota request, etc. But I'm not even able to file a request. It just says to call sales for any limit above "0". Lol.
- sgammon 4y agoCalled Sales. Sales said no. Asked why. "You're not a business." "I'm a sole proprietor." "Fine, email gcteam@google.com and wait up to 24 hrs" emails gcteam@google.com, it bounces Amazing
