Applying to College, and Trying to Appear ‘Less Asian’
- atonse 4y agoAll this is good to read about but is there talk about maybe starting to teach our kids that there are a million paths to success besides the Ivy League? I don’t see any of these families doing that. I have already started telling my kids they should go to a state school and save a ton of money. Like both my wife and I. And we are doing just fine. Is everyone so wrapped up running the rat race to notice that? Part of the problem is attaching too much value to these schools.
- taolegal 4y agoI stressed myself out so much in high school thinking about the Ivy League when I really had no business in applying. I ended up having the epiphany early on and accepting that a state school was likely a better match. It ended up being one of the best decisions I've made. So many friends ended up paying boatloads at a private school.
- downvoteme1 4y agoCan a business do the same discrimination while hiring but only for black applicants. Systematically reject them and if a lawsuit comes over , just say that you were rejected on the basis of “personal rating” — a subjective score for traits like self-confidence, likability and kindness wherein you scored less than candidates of other races ? Won’t this make a total mockery of the affirmative action clause.

- xhkkffbf 4y agoA friend from the Philippines just happened to have a grandfather with a spanish surname leftover from the spanish occupation. Voila. The friend checked the "hispanic american" box. Checking the "asian" box would almost certainly been less successful.
- CorrectHorseBat 4y agoWhy doesn't everyone just fill in African American? Everyone can trace their roots back to Africa. I'm only half joking, how would it ever be possible to verify such a claim?
- Ferrotin 4y agoThey could look at a picture of you.
- Gunax 4y agoAFAIK admissions departments don't have pictures of their applicants.
- CorrectHorseBat 4y agoHow does that help anything? That's not objective at all. There are white Africans (Elon Musk) and Europeans who can pass for northern Africans. You can also find siblings of which one could pass as black and the other as white. The idea you can easily divide people in different race groups is literally the definition of racism. It doesn't work and we shouldn't be doing it.
- Ferrotin 4y agoThat isn’t the definition of racism at all, and it does work, you can identify race from appearance. Give it a try.
- CorrectHorseBat 4y agoYou can also find siblings of which one could pass as black and the other as white. Sometimes even parents and children. Would they then be of a different race? What are the different human races you can identify from appearance if I may ask?
