Official list of SOPA supporters
- amalcon 15y agoThe major U.S. cable companies seem to be on that list. The major U.S. phone companies do not. Many of us are in a situation where our ISP choices consist of the cable company and the phone company. One might consider this a point in the phone company's favor.
- nextparadigms 15y agoThis is why I think Youtube would've died a long time ago under SOPA. The cable companies companies and TV networks hate Youtube, and it would've been a piece of cake to take down Youtube before it would've grown too large.
- armandososa 15y agoAnd there's the Gospel Music Association. Could there be anything more opposite to the concept of gospel than the concept of copyright?. Absurdity.
- eberfreitas 15y agoOr _market_!
- wakoumel 15y agoSo how do we hurt these company's pockets? Anything besides not buying their products?
- kaybe 15y agoIs hurting them really the only option? Converting would be more useful..

- MBlume 15y agoIn the majority of cases, a boycott will not work. If 100 million people use a product every day, you have to get 1 million people to care enough to participate before the company even notices something's happening. The trick is to look for places where the set of people who actually care about the issue is able to make an impact. My guess is that the best focal point here is in hiring engineers. Decent hackers should not work at companies on this list. I think if we make a bit if a cultural shift within our community, if we start considering it a true mark of shame to have worked for one of these firms past 2012, that might start to hurt them.
- tectonic 15y agoI remember the days when boycots were very effective. Can we do that again?
- danssig 15y agoThey still are. Glenn Beck isn't on Fox anymore, right?
- clarebear 15y agoI was surprised by Revlon, L'Oreal, and Tiffany & Co. I can understand why makers of music and movies might (wrongly) support this, but why makeup and jewelry?
- premchai21 15y agoI'm guessing that Flash being embedded from scribdassets.com is the list? I don't suppose there's a way to get access to this in plain text, or even a raster image?
- cjensen 15y agoThere's a link to the PDF near the top of the article. Worked on my iPad, may help others.

- cheald 15y agoHow hard would it be to compile a list of major products and services provided by these companies? If there were an easy punchlist of "Hey, this product supports these companies, and here are some alternatives", it might be a lot easier to organize and conduct boycotts. Hell, I'll even throw you a business model - build a product that helps conscientious consumers avoid products by entities that they oppose, and make money advertising and earning affiliate revenue from those products' competitors. Advertisers would kill for those pageviews.
- thisismyname 15y agoThis isn't about Hollywood... Its about Wikileaks and everyone else who wants to use their first ammendment right. thats my $.02
- zbowling 15y agowho makes it "official".
- superchink 15y ago"The U.S. House judiciary committee responsible for the Stop Online Piracy Act (or SOPA)" - from the first sentence in the link (note the URL for the PDF is at http://judiciary.house.gov http://judiciary.house.gov).
- runjake 15y agoAt least one company that was apparently on the list strongly denies they support or ever supported SOPA and PROTECT IP: http://www.petzl.com/us/outdoor/news-2/2011/12/22/petzl-americas-stance-sopa-and-protect-ip http://www.petzl.com/us/outdoor/news-2/2011/12/22/petzl-amer... I wonder how many others are puppet entries. They'd better speak up fast before their reputation is ruined.
- lukeqsee 15y agoAnd here is your list of companies to boycott. We can talk all we want, but until our money matches our mouths nothing will happen. (GoDaddy is just the start.)
- masmullin 15y agoI was initially against SOPA, but seeing as the United States Tennis Association supports SOPA, I've decided that it's obviously in the best interests of the Internets. If there is one truth to this world, its that the United States Tennis Association knows Internets.
- marquis 15y agoYes, today it occurred to me that pirated sets of Wimbledon matches must really be hurting the tennis business.
- va_coder 15y agoThis is simply old and big media desperately trying to hold on to power.
- jaysonelliot 15y agoIs there an official list of SOPA opponents?
- Natsu 15y agoEverybody else, minus those who have never heard of it. Or something like that. Seriously, though, the best I could find were the creators of http://americancensorship.org/ http://americancensorship.org/ I'm sure that there's a lot more opposition than just the people who created that, but that site doesn't appear to have a supporters page that one can sign on to. Or if they do, I missed it.
- pauldino 15y agoNot official, but http://www.cdt.org/report/list-organizations-and-individuals-opposing-sopa http://www.cdt.org/report/list-organizations-and-individuals... has a long list of letters of opposition and concern from a wide range of organizations and individuals addressed to congress.
- gnufied 15y agoI am surprised Visa is both in proponents and opponents list. :)
- BrainInAJar 15y agoHedging their bets I guess. Common to donate to both the Republicans and the Democrats, because no matter who wins they're ingratiated to you. Why supporting and opposing a piece of legislation makes sense I don't know
- rolando 15y agonotice how many law firms are on this list
- topherjaynes 15y agoWhy so many cosmetic companies? And Tiffany and Co? Actually kind of curious do they have parent companies on the list?t
- gws 15y agoBoth MasterCard and Visa are in the list (while I read somewhere else Amex is against SOPA), why would they support SOPA?
