This is pretty light on details, an overview adapted from a book but when I read about these people I believe they are responding to two phenomena:
1. An attention economy where you must get more and more extreme in order to get anyone to pay any attention to you
2. Frustration among the ruling class (whose attention and money they badly desire) over people, notably their inability to follow their edicts, and the environmental impacts of this.
The 2nd is a dangerous thing in my opinion, as individualism and humanism is falling out of fashion among the ruling class and you get outright admiration of collectivist societies like China's where the individual is not a roadblock for their goals.
