It's painfully transparent how purposeful this has been at the media level, and I've come to believe that there's a very large group of voices who are perfectly fine with what's going on because the fallout "hurt the right people" in their eyes.

  I believe it's imperative to be conscious of the fact that any rule of thumb can become a conventional wisdom trap given the right circumstances. This very much feels like one of them.
