Fleetwood Mac’s Christine McVie dies at age 79
- cafard 4y agoIt should not be a shock, but somehow it is when the rock stars of one's youth turn out to be quite old.
- raffraffraff 4y agoGetting old is like boiling the frog. You don't notice it happening, but every now and then something throws it into relief. Like, I met a friend from college a few days ago and while he's the same guy I met in '93, I saw his current image through the eyes of my 17 year old self: a fat, bald, middle-aged man with a grey beard and glasses. He looked like some of the people who fucking died when I was a kid (several kids at my school had a parent die 'around' our age). But yeah, Bowie was a shock to me. It wasn't the same as with Presley, Lennon, Mercury or Cobain. You always knew that bad shit could happen to people. It's shocking when the spool just runs out for someone who was a rock star when you were in your teens. That said, Bowie died young by today's standards. I don't think you could say the same for McVie. But then again, my old man is 96 in January. Drove a bloody steam train in his mid 20s. His knees are fucked, he needs to plan all his excursions around toilets and he's on heart pills. But he's still 100% fine "upstairs" and had a terrific memory for stuff that happened from the mid 1930s on. He got married in his mid 40s, and I was born when he was nearly 50. If I get his longevity genes and don't get hit by a truck, I'm only half way through the spool. But then again, all of his siblings and original school/work friends are dead, so our shock at McVie must seem as nothing to him.
