De-paving paradise, one parking space at a time
- josephcsible 4y agoHas the author never had to park in a city? Because it's obvious to anyone who has that most cities have too few parking spots.
- sohkamyung 4y agoFrom the author's open access paper (linked in the article) [1]: >High vacancy rates in off-street parking areas are typical in many cities, with a substantial portion of street parking used by residents with access to garages. Central city garages also have low utilisation rates; even before the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020-21, apartment parking in central Melbourne had a considerable vacancy rate (26–41%). This extent of underutilisation is significant considering that the municipality has 49,500 off-street residential parking spaces, more than double the on-street allocation of 23,500 spaces.
