Maersk, IBM shutting down blockchain-enabled supply chain project
- brutus1213 4y agoIBM pushed block chain a lot. Is this (TradeLens?) an offshoot or is their whole effort being subset.
- veqq 4y agoIt seems they're cutting their losses with everything. 4 years ago, IBM was putting out blockchain commercials but following their links e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VQsMwNCqZ8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VQsMwNCqZ8 you see that they've been removed. They were putting out courses etc. too but this supply chain offering was their main move, from what I know working around the industry. I recall discussions about private blockchains being all companies would actually really want - and how IBM was trying to frontrun SAP and so on by putting out a blockchain enabled solution first. But already in early 2021 they started closing it down after 90% losses: https://www.coindesk.com/business/2021/02/01/ibm-blockchain-is-a-shell-of-its-former-self-after-revenue-misses-job-cuts-sources/ https://www.coindesk.com/business/2021/02/01/ibm-blockchain-...
- Melting_Harps 4y ago> IBM pushed block chain a lot. No they didn't, they gave the illusion they did and never fulfilled on anything or ever developed anything with the tech, they only used it as a marketing gimmick to garner more money from the multi-nationals who already pay for their legacy software. They had everything going for them, but their is a reason they've since been broken up into 2 different companies. It's just sad, and a cautionary tale of what happens when your company gets complacent and relies way to heavily on the archaic model and refuse to adapt to modernity. For posterity's sake go look at what connections they had with Stellar and Ripple, and see how blind their management class were as they ended up in the cross-hairs of the SEC. Honestly, this is one of the times I say good riddance; we never needed them and their arrogance and eventual failure were predictable!
- animitronix 4y agoAbout time. Maybe we can finally start moving on from the cryptobro-era of false promises, hype, and stupidity (throw web3 on the pile too). But probably not...
- Woodi 4y agoYes, pleas. But actually hash-chain is useful tool, eg. git. Difference is: it is some gear inside something doing something and not something on their own. Accounting was using "column sums" on every document page for centuries and "block-chain" is exactly that, just for less structured data. As for Maersk-IBM "international system" - maybe they should try something domestic first, like military storage/purchase tracing ;)
