- PaulHoule 4y agoOne reason why Americans don’t want to go into STEM is that there are so many foreigners competing for STEM jobs. Insofar as there is ‘white privilege’ you certainly check it by going into STEM. As much as I like the Indians I’ve worked with and talked with many about them with the awful immigration problems thy have it is also a real problem that young people in America really feel like there ain’t no making it. I love the article though, I think China gets talked up too much, India needs some attention too.
- frontman1988 4y agoI doubt there are many people not taking STEM because they are scared of foreign competition. All the students on visa only arrive in university and not in high school where future career decisions are made. The real reason is STEM requires grit and critical thinking which is not taught in the American Education system. Not to mention STEM jobs are not seen as cool and things nerds do.
- PaulHoule 4y agoI hear adults telling kids to not go into STEM (like my uncle told me) because of foreign competition. Exactly: that’s the sense in which you give up your privilege when you take up STEM. It automatically makes you less than human in some people’s eyes and racism against Asians has very much the same components.
