Interestingly, the American Samoa recruiting office has the highest recruitment rate of any such center for the entire United States' armed forces. One bizarre side effect of this massive recruiting drive is that American Samoan enlisted men and women retire to the mainland and then are unable to take up jobs they are more than qualified for, such as sheriff deputy or police detective. (These roles require US Citizenship which they obviously lack.) This situation has led to a number of lawsuits, none of which have satisfactorily solved the issue. It seems the courts are mostly content to let Congress and American Samoa eventually solve the incongruence, even if the present situation is somewhat without parallel and extremely inconvenient for those caught in the edge cases.
