May Shopify's immunity spread to the whole herd
- Corrado 4y agoI'm no fan of extremists on either side but I think I agree with DHH on this. Restricting what a store sells doesn't seem to be a path forward. Of course, you are free to not purchase those things but that doesn't mean that no one else should be able to. It's kind of like the library; I may not agree with every thing on the shelf but I don't think I want to be the one banning or burning books.
- Corrado 4y agoThen again, reading Spotify's acceptable use policy[0] shows a section on "Hateful content": > You may not use the Services to promote or condone hate or violence against people based on race, ethnicity, color, national origin, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, medical condition, veteran status or other forms of discriminatory intolerance. You may not use the Services to promote or support organizations, platforms or people that: (i) promote or condone such hate; or (ii) threaten or condone violence to further a cause. Does a mug saying "STOP GROOMING OUR KIDS" qualify as hateful content? 0 - https://www.shopify.com/legal/aup https://www.shopify.com/legal/aup

- readonthegoapp 4y agoOne of the guy's points is that stochastic terrorism doesn't exist. Ok.
- Corrado 4y agoI've never heard the term before so I looked it up. According to Dictionary.com: >Stochastic terrorism is “the public demonization of a person or group resulting in the incitement of a violent act, which is statistically probable but whose specifics cannot be predicted.” The word stochastic, in everyday language, means “random.” Terrorism, here, refers to “violence motivated by ideology.” Here’s the idea behind stochastic terrorism: 1. A leader or organization uses rhetoric in the mass media against a group of people. 2. This rhetoric, while hostile or hateful, doesn’t explicitly tell someone to carry out an act of violence against that group, but a person, feeling threatened, is motivated to do so as a result. 3. That individual act of political violence can’t be predicted as such, but that violence will happen is much more probable thanks to the rhetoric. 4. This rhetoric is thus called stochastic terrorism because of the way it incites random violence.
- ZeroGravitas 4y agoDid something happen to DHH recenly, or was it a slow slide into this?
- Corrado 4y agoNo idea, but I'm trying to look at it in a positive light. My knee-jerk reaction is to gasp and grab my pearls, which is wrong. I think this is a subtle issue that needs careful examination. I'm not a big fan of "The Big Bang Theory" sitcom and think that it perpetuates negative "nerd" stereotypes, but I don't want to ban Target from selling TBBT t-shirts and mugs.
