I'm not an electrician so this random idea might be stupid: could one disperse large batteries around the grid, such that at peak load these large batteries can drain to meet the demand, then charge during off peak hours?
- jmnicolas 4y agoI'm not sure even more batteries is environmentally friendly.
- cagenut 4y agoyes but the upgraded/replaced transformer will be much cheaper than the battery, so it would take some other circumstance (an impossible to upgrade transmission/distribution line) for it to make sense. our grids will start to grow batteries at pinch points, already are, but it will be an exceptions/corner-cases thing, the economics don't work for the broad-average.

- silviot 4y agoV2G [1] sounds relevant: > Vehicle-to-grid (V2G), also known as Vehicle-to-home (V2H) or Vehicle-to-load (V2L) describes a system in which plug-in electric vehicles (PEV) sell demand response services to the grid. Demand services are either delivering electricity or by reducing their charging rate. Demand services reduce pressure on the grid, which might otherwise experience disruption from load variations. - liampulles 4y agoJust need to try and incentivize things such that everyone is not either charging all at the same time or discharging all at the same time - maybe some scheme to incentivize leaving your car at home for certain days of the week or similar...
- sandos 4y agoOf course, and this is already being done in various forms, see "neighbourhood batteries" as exist in Australia at least.
