Location makes a big difference too. I've always lived in big cities in areas with lots of expats and transient people. Its very easy to make friends. In suburbs its tougher, especially in areas where people grew up still know neighbors from elementary school. The other thing is I've always had room mates - its a lot cheaper and more social. I never really wanted to live by myself.
