I worked somewhere where almost everything was run on some kind of mainframe, but it was abstracted from 90% or more of the developers, who wrote more or less normal code in normal languages. The “mainframe programming” was basically a systems level or infra type role providing this platform to everyone else. I imagine this is equivalent to a k8s team in other companies. However I’m sure there are plenty of banks and other places that are actually writing business logic with the mainframes’ toolset.
