Awfice – Small office suite

- ksaj 4y agoI don't see any value whatsoever in removing carriage returns just so you can say it's one line of code. It might make it sound clever, but it really isn't. It's not good to read, and that to me is much more of a minus than a plus.
- nine_k 4y agoEach CR is one byte; removing them makes the code noticeably smaller. Each piece of code is well under a kilobyte,
- ksaj 4y agoAh... so it's the challenge, and not whether anyone will ever use it. In the same vein, there's an old DOS assembler trick from the late 80's through the mid 90's - remap INT 20h (which was a 1-byte opcode to exit the currently running program), to INT 21h (a 2-byte instruction for DOS, which includes a clean exit for the program as a built-in function). This could break how programs exit cleanly, but probably never did. In a substantial program, it saved a lot of bytes in DOS calls. It was mostly used competitively, but it was a pretty stable code size hack.
- anthk 4y agoMeh. Smallest while depending on a browser is not the smallest.
- benj111 4y agoDo you also comment on every app described as tiny that doesn't include all the software it runs on? FTA >this project is only a half-joke, They aren't even selling this as being serious, let alone saying this is great for small underpowered computers in developing nations. This is basically a sizecoding challenge. They did it, they're presumably happy with it. If you want to come back with a boot sector office suite, you'll get my upvote, but pissing over someone's "half-joke" just wastes everybody's time.
- v3ss0n 4y agoSize of a lib ? nobody cares about it unless going into small devices.
- wildrhythms 4y agoI care and I don't see what this has to do with 'small devices' whatever that is supposed to mean.
- chadlavi 4y agoThis is a fun little thing. Note that the drawing one does NOT work on iOS. Just keeps trying to refresh the page because you're pulling down. Can only make little errant marks.
- omeysalvi 4y agoIf this has just a few more features, I'd legit use this as a notion replacement: 1. Tabbed file browser in a side pane 2. File tagging and favorites 3. Table sort and filter 4. Numbered and multilevel lists in text editor mode.
- throwaway413 4y agoI’d love to hear what the inspiration for this was. Maybe just a code golf project for fun, but based on the author’s last blog post, something tells me the iceberg of inspiration runs deep. My follow up question would be, how do you envision sharing a sheet? With someone right next to me, and with someone across the world. With or without internet access, seeing that this office suite is offline-first.
