“Pushing spam” seems very interpretable. Does spam have to be to more than one user? So targeted harassment that is not of a commercial or imminently violent nature is ok now?
Also at least up until now I think Twitters interpretation of hate speech has been beyond what the law requires, will that go away and racial slurs will be allowed or will they still take down posts without banning.(depends on country for sure)
I have to imagine there is a ripe opportunity for a “serious person” to grab most of these journalist/politician users, outside the far right who may revel in the new Twitter. Post.news?
It’s an interesting time to go full trumpist and double down on the MAGA crowd since the Republican Party seems to be turning away from Trump, at least for now. Is there a world where Musk makes Twitter so good, it reduces the risk of having him at the helm, and they’re no longer as susceptible to a strong competitor?
- elmerfud 4y agoAll platforms hate speech policies go beyond the law in the USA, not just Twitter's. Hate speech is still free speech according to the supreme court. Hate speech is not "fighting words".
- mikkergp 4y ago> All platforms hate speech policies go beyond the law in the USA, not just Twitter's. Correct, one of the provisions in section 230 permits this, but Elon Musk is now saying anything that is not illegal, but also showing charts that show the reduction in hate speech, so which is it?
- krapp 4y ago> Is there a world where Musk makes Twitter so good, it reduces the risk of having him at the helm, and they’re no longer as susceptible to a strong competitor? Good for whom? Anti-wokists, anti-LGBT bigots, anti-semites, white supremacists, conspiracy theorists, trolls and QAnons are bound to have a field day, but no one else wants to share a platform where such people get to run rampant as a matter of policy. Making Twitter good for as many people as possible would necessitate moderating to a global middle ground (because - as Elon is discovering from the mountain of lawsuits from countries where his mass firing policies are illegal - Twitter is an international site) for which standards are far more restrictive than 4chan. But it seems obvious given Elon's rhetoric ("woke mind virus," etc) and actions that he doesn't want Twitter to work for the masses, he wants it to work for the American right-wing internet goblin horde. No, even at this point, I think Elon has permanently destroyed his own reputation, and Twitter's fate as long as he's there is a slow but inevitable rot as the cancer takes over. Advertisers are already leaving and competitors are already taking in refugees. I don't think there will be just one primary replacement for Twitter, though, but a fragmentation of the userbase across numerous platforms.
