Jean-Marie Straub has died
- pasttense01 4y agoRelatively few here use French; it would have been much better to provide English language references such as: https://www.newyorker.com/culture/postscript/the-stubborn-enduring-vision-of-jean-marie-straub https://www.newyorker.com/culture/postscript/the-stubborn-en... https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/24/movies/jean-marie-straub-dead.html https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/24/movies/jean-marie-straub-... https://www.theguardian.com/film/2022/nov/21/radical-french-director-jean-marie-straub-dies-aged-89 https://www.theguardian.com/film/2022/nov/21/radical-french-... https://deadline.com/2022/11/jean-marie-straub-dead-obituary-89-1235178517/ https://deadline.com/2022/11/jean-marie-straub-dead-obituary... https://variety.com/2022/global/obituaries-people-news/jean-marie-straub-dead-daniele-huillet-director-1235438308/ https://variety.com/2022/global/obituaries-people-news/jean-...
- scarface74 4y agoobservation: There was a post on HN in German and the built in translation read very naturally (https://lsww.de/shopify-illegal/ https://lsww.de/shopify-illegal/) The translation of this article from French definitely read computerized.
- coolandsmartrr 4y agoI thought it was in English, but I just noticed it was auto-translate in my browser.
- JadeNB 4y ago> Relatively few here use French; it would have been much better to provide English language references …. As someone who speaks only English fluently, and understands only the barest smattering of French, I still don't want to encourage linguistic parochialism here. In this community as in any other, it's all too easy to fall into bubbles; why not encourage content in a variety of languages as we do content from a variety of points of view, especially when (as scarface mentioned https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33738980 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33738980) good auto-translate is available, and helpful users like you can link to additional context in English? (I'd also mention that it's not obvious to me that relatively few here use French. Do you know that, or is it a guess?)
- hacksoi 4y agoThe vast majority of us are English speakers.
- JadeNB 4y ago> The vast majority of us are English speakers. That's quite different from saying that "Relatively few here use French".

- paganel 4y agoRelated, I heartily recommend to any film buff a visit to the Swiss Cinematheque when they are in Lausanne.
