Leaving aside the (mostly abstract) questions about rights, the question in my mind is, who has the muscle? If Holyrood simply declared independence, would the Scottish police arrest the members, like the Spanish police did in Catalonia? Would the EU back the status of the new nation? My guess to those questions, as it stands, is yes, and no. So I suspect the SNP strategy is to build domestic and international support until either the UK is forced to allow a referendum, or the answer is no, and yes.
