Twitter can continue running with 100 engineers or less. That said, can they iterate fast enough on moderation and fraud prevention? Apply security fixes responding to the newest threats? Deliver on advertising customer demands? Stay competitive in terms of features vs other social network platforms? I doubt it, but I bet they can do a decent job with less engineers than they used to have.
- dublin 4y agoGiven that they're going to be making substantial (and long-needed) changes to Twitter's architecture anyway, I'm not sure that the existing staff has a lot more value than hiring afresh. New features will need to take into account the new architectures. New hires would also help the company shed people with the arrogant, entitled attitude of every Twitter employee I've ever met (with the exception of Musk).
- wreath 4y agoRearchitecting without knowledge of the existing architecture and why things are designed the way they are is a recipe for disaster and i known it first hand.
- dublin 4y agoChevron ran tens of thousands of Unix workstations and servers doing billions of dollars worth of work each year with fewer than a dozen admins. In 1994. (BTW, Chevron's non-Unix IT is a complete train wreck, but that setup from last century was the most advanced distributed/automated Unix admin/devops/elastic resources system I had ever seen until about 10 years ago...)
