In my view, the placeholder text in a search field shouldn't be capitalized—the text you type in it isn't capitalized either. In general, capitalization is a complex question that I've agonized a lot about in different contexts. But this thing just tells you that it's "wrong" to not capitalize it. No discussion, it's just "wrong".
