A family friend passed away in his late 50s due to his excessive consumption of illegally made alcohol* (stuff like mahua, taadi and something he used to call "pouch" which I am not really sure what it was really). Though, him not buying a normal whisky or rum was cause he wasn't that well off and the state he lived in has banned alcohol for years, and to procure it illegally you need to cough up extra money.
But it's good that these alcohols are moving out from the unorganized into the organized sector. That can help with quality controls and help India have its indigenous alcohol drinks that it can export. Mostly, if I go to the alcohol shops, I can only find vodka, rum, whisky, wine and, beer but nothing from the authentic country side.
*He had a bunch of other things going on as well
