My hustle culture friend just died of a heart attack at age 32

- ok_dad 4y agoEver? Even worse than the /r/jailbait and others from the past?
- Firmwarrior 4y agoMan, I'm pretty sure you can hustle up $150k a year without being a zombie and never having any fun AntiWork does some good stuff sometimes, but in general it's a toxic swamp that's heavily biased to concoct and promote anything that encourages and glorifies laziness
- tinglymintyfrsh 4y agoBecome a MAANG employee. (Just don't look at stock prices or RSUs.)
- tennisflyi 4y agoPrey tell.
- Firmwarrior 4y agolook at the jobs on levels.fyi or HackerNews' own jobs threads $150k is very doable as a 100% remote job with a medium-sized company in the USA $300-$500k is possible too, and I still have paternity leave, time every day to take my kid to the park, yearly multi-week vacations, sick days, etc AntiWork is good if you need to get some "FU" energy to stand up to a bad boss at a minimum wage gig, but it's not a good place to stay if you want to get anywhere in life.
- halfmatthalfcat 4y agoYou can hustle and still take care of your body/mind, unlike the person mentioned in the post. I would even argue that is part of the hustle. You need to hustle to keep yourself hustling, which is probably a whole discipline in and of itself.
- rmbyrro 4y ago"There's this guy that never worked in his life, and he died of a heart attack at 32". Someone in "/prowork" could write this and it would be equally relevant for my life choices. Meaning: zero relevance.
- hobbitstan 4y agoOh, it’s Reddit. Never happened. Double-oh, it’s r/antiwork. Fan fiction for the masses.

- nonameiguess 4y agoThis reminds of all the horror stories around sports and steroids and what not "giving" young people heart attacks. Short of taking extremely high stimulant doses during hell week two-a-days, there is very little you can do to give yourself a heart attack at a very young age. Smoking for 5 years and being somewhat sleep-deprived is not going to do that by 32, especially not if you've been working out every morning since college. You'll eventually suffer an increased risk of chronic diseases that can kill you, but not until many decades in the future. Assuming this really happened, the guy had a congenital heart defect.
- pasttense01 4y agoIt's doubtful if the hustling had anything to do with the heart attack. But the point is that you might live until 90--or die tomorrow in a car accident. So if you plan your life (unlike some of us who just drift aimlessly through life) you need to take the full range of possibilities into consideration. So this guy didn't take into consideration the possibility he would have a short life--while the guy who lives paycheck to paycheck doesn't take into consideration that things can go bad (from disability or a recession...)
- tempera 4y agoSudden Adult Death Syndrome is a new occurring thing. Lot of hits on search engines. Looks to be it!
