Isn’t this stack ranking?
- UncleMeat 4y agoDepends on what specifically you mean by stack ranking. The way that ratings work at Google is that each person is compared against the level expectations, not each other. But when you've got an org of 1,000 people it starts to become inevitable that some people won't be meeting expectations. If numbers are wildly off then there's some extra review to make sure that the org is training people to interpret the ladder expectations correctly. Sometimes this process breaks down and shitty directors give teams mandatory distributions. It's been done this way for years and years. I've never personally witnessed anybody get asked to bump down a rating they believed to be correct because of expected distributions. Are there people who end up "ranked" lower than other people? Yes. Are those rankings decided by comparison with other people? Explicitly not. The thing people usually worry about with stack ranking is people being incentivized to make other people perform badly or be perceived as performing badly so there is somebody to go below them in the stack. I don't observe this where I sit at Google.
