Study challenges HDL cholesterol's role in universally predicting heart disease
- steve_adams_86 4y agoThis isn’t surprising given that there are known genetic differences in how some African American people present and sufffer with high cholesterol compared to Caucasian Americans. I don’t recall the specific differences, but I do recall that there are two distinct genetic traits which increase risk. Here is one of them, but I can’t find the other at the moment: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2000/05/000512084017.htm https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2000/05/000512084017.h... In both cases they’re not always present, but the rate of occurrence seemed quite high. When I found that out I wondered how much that alters population statistics, because the rate of occurrence seems so significant. It seems like risks are generally higher for African Americans, and while population-based statistics are still useful (they indicate enough people are at risk that we should all be more careful), they would be more useful if genetics were factored in.
