Of course this is my first submission to HN and I did not even think how/whether posts get on the first page. This one seems to not even show up on '/newest' let alone '/new'. Is there some algorithm as to when posts get to the landing page ( /new ) or other site areas? What are the spam filters and rules for first time posters?
