Prices of food would have to increase by an order of magnitude to make today's vertical farms financially practical. There is a reason why they are pushing the space angle. Space industry is very price insensitive.
I absolutely LOVE the concept of vertical and indoor farming, hydroponics, and aquaponics. But I am accurately aware of the difference in cost.
- gus_massa 4y agoI agree, but he main problem is that farming requires a lot of space. From https://homesteading.com/subsistence-farming/ https://homesteading.com/subsistence-farming/ you need 100mx100m (300ftx300ft). Let's divide it by 2 because indoor light can be on all day, and by 4 because you can't cultivate during all the year. You still 10xx100m (30ftx300ft). Instead of 2D farming, let's use some 3D farming like in the video. How more efficient is it? Can you put 10 shelves inside a usual room? You still 10xx10m (30ftx30ft). That's like 9 rooms for each person for farming. Assuming there are one or two rooms per person in a city like the city they show in the video, you need at least 5 vertical farm building for each habitable building. (Or 5 farming floors for each habitable floor in each building.) (Or add 9xN farming rooms to your home if you live with N persons.)
