I more or less agree with the approach advocated (not that anyone asked). Reasoning out how to produce the fundamental state of awareness (“the lights are on”) itself is the tricky bit. All the phenomena that occur within that are “easy”. Abstracting away all of the parts that “aren’t relevant” helps to distill to the core idea, which is that we ought to be able to determine how to produce awareness via software. Unless, of course, awareness is not a function of information processing (ex: “souls” are involved), or some bit of the processing machinery was relevant and needs to be incorporated. Meh.
