Question for any mathematicians here: are properties of numbers that relate to their representation in particular number bases considered interesting or useful by mathematicians? I ask because the wikipedia page for repunit (a term I wasn't familiar with before) implies that it is in the domain of recreational mathematics. So my question refers to professional / non-recreational mathematicians.
