Having friends in childhood/pubescence is a survival level necessity for most of the kids. We all know countless examples of awful things done to keep or gain the position in school/class hierarchy, to fulfill expectations, to deserve respect of peers. This urge dissolves in most of the people towards adulthood and maturity, when we are learning to find inner support, to form our own opinion about ourselves and to rely on that opinion more than on an external judgement.
