One tone deaf component of EA (and others) is that there seems to be a belief in near infinite scalability of providing help. But mainly what i see as a very arrogant western savior complex that, whilst undoubtedly helping individuals in some cases, is adrift from the reality of the nation states they seek to "help" people in. Now they do consider these points but never come to realistic conclusions.
Much of Sub Saharan Africa leverages a century of western innovation in social justice to oppress, manipulate and impoverish their citizens. Money spent there will be subject to rampant theft. Even in once more developed nations like South Africa this corruption is everywhere.
The side effect of aid permeation also means a death to local economic growth. It also enables significantly higher fertility levels than most western countries that are not matched by economic growth to supply jobs.
To do anything about that would require semi-imperialistic state capture to ensure standards of governance that currently exist in few of the concerned countries.
The world has become so obsessed with using data to make decisions that it fails to step back and look at the bigger picture. This goes for The Gates Foundation too.
