For Peterson and the Bee, the situation wasn't that they were given indefinite suspensions outright, but that they were given short-duration suspensions where the timer only started once they deleted the tweets that were found to be rule-breaking. They chose not to delete the tweets, and so they stayed suspended.
I the suspended user having to press a button to delete the tweet that broke a rule is a fascinating moderation feature. Its impact is almost purely psychological. On top of the incovenience of not being able to post for a while, it adds the emotional cost of having to swallow their own pride when a rule violation is found in order to regain access. And occasionally an account which has violated a rule will just decide to voluntarily permaban itself.
