Rust is simpler than C++, and the complexity it adds relative to C pays for itself pretty significantly in correctness (C++ is more complex and provides fewer/weaker correctness guarantees). Moreover, there aren't many systems languages to choose from--at least not many that are not super-niche. Even Ada is pretty niche with little mindshare/enthusiasm.
