I started learning HTML in 2001 (or 2000) and typically plain HTML websites at that time were boring, so there were some ways to enhance it, e.g Flash. I took a different route: DHTML, and then website development felt more fun. Perhaps the point is to use CSS/JSS libraries/frameworks sparingly.
