I seem to remember netbooks (even with the power sucking chipsets the early ones had) being pretty popular for short awhile. Ultimately they were kind of a flash in the pan, but Microsoft was sufficiently afraid of them they brought XP back from the dead just so they could get linux off the things. (Vista/7 are way to big of resource hogs to run tolerably on these, although they did have some starter edition of windows7 for the better performing later models)
