The Future of the Amazon, and Maybe the Planet, Depends on Brazil’s Lula
- smsm42 4y agoI'm pretty sure that the planet doesn't depend on Brazil’s Lula, and also that a lot of people are tired of headlines that declare that the future of the planet depends on every little thing that happened today.
- 29athrowaway 4y agoDon't count on that. Instead, preserve trees where you live and reduce your carbon footprint. What Lula does or does not do is beyond your control. One good way of reducing your footprint is: no air travel, don't eat meat. Want to go on vacation to some distant place? fuck it. Do something else. You adapt to the planet, not the other way around. We are all for the environment until it is time to downscale our lifestyle.
- andrew_ 4y agoBrazil is a bit of a tinder box right now [1]. The New Yorker piece is woefully premature 1. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/bolsonaro-supporters-protest-against-brazils-presidential-election-results https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/bolsonaro-supporters-prot...
- matheusmoreira 4y agoYes. So far protests have not been violent but they are escalating. Judges started freezing people's assets, protesters started blocking roads again... In Bolivia, a socialist president was deposed via similarly escalating protests that culminated in government buildings being set on fire.
