It doesn't matter how 'noble' the research seems, these funds were clearly raised through criminal activity. It really sucks for the researchers, but the people who earned that money have a fundamental right to decide how it is spent. Stealing your money and pledging it to goals you may not agree with is a right strictly reserved for governments.
